PoitĂn has been leading people astray for centuries. Secretly made and hidden in bogs and fields around Ireland, poitĂn was both everywhere and nowhere.
Much like the elusive hare, the crafty poitĂn makers were rarely captured and so the recipe was passed down through generations, giving us the mischievous spirit we have today.
Mad March Hare is a classic, Irish PoitĂn of unrivalled smoothness and flavour. Forced underground in 1661, the craft of making poitĂn never died.
Quietly distilled in Ireland from locally sourced malted barley, yeast and water then triple distilled in copper pots we cut the spirit to 40% ABV, removing some (but not all) of the fairies’ fiery mischief.Â
The result is a clear spirit packed with warmth and character.
This age old recipe pays homage to Mooney, who was a master of this long out-lawed trade. After all it only took him 27 attempts to get it just right!
